The Faculty of Applied Health Sciences is one of six faculties at the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. It is also one of the smallest faculties within the university. The current Dean of AHS is a professor from Recreation and Leisure studies, Dr. Roger Mannel.
The faculty presently houses three academic departments. They are Kinesiology, and Recreation and Leisure Studies and The School of Public Health and Health Systems (Formerly Health Studies and Gerontology). All three programs offer a 5 year co-op degree and a 4 year regular degree. The School of Public Health and Health systems and Kinesiology offer a Bachelors of Science and a Bachelors of Arts is offered by Recreation and Leisure Studies.
Beginnings
Kinesiology was founded as the department of Physical Education. Their original home was the Physical Activities Complex before moving to Burt Mathews Hall in the mid 1980's. The department moved away from the Physical education side and inc The department has continued to develop over the past two decades. It is one of the best kinesiology programs in Canada. Undergraduates have the opportunity to remain in a general program or pursue concentrations in Neurobehavioural Assessment, Ergonomics or Pre-Health. There are also several other streams an undergraduate can follow: physiology, biomechanics and sports medicine.
